What types of swimwear fabric are there?

Swimwear fabric can be very confusing to understand at first, which is why it is so important to understand your options. In this post I will go over some of the best fabrics I've used for making swimwear, and what kinds of things to look for in this process!

2-way fabric only stretches in one direction- vertically or horizontally. Typically, 2-way fabric will stretch horizontally. This can be tough if you are making something like a one-piece, which needs to stretch horizontally around your body, but also vertically along your torso and through the shoulder straps. Not recommended for beginners, and not the best for swimwear in general. 4-way stretches both vertically and horizontally. This should be your go-to stretch, as it will leave out your fit worries. You can cut the fabric however you want, being able to cut in any direction without having to worry about what direction it will stretch. Try your best to look for 4-way stretch when buying any swimwear fabric.

Polyester spandex can be a little more difficult to work with than the basic, easy nylon spandex. This fabric is typically around 90% polyester and 10% spandex. The high amount of polyester makes it softer, but also a little more sheer and flimsy. We wouldn't recommend this fabric for beginners!

Cotton spandex is a thicker version of nylon spandex. It is easy to work with since it has cotton in it, but the fabric is tougher and may not be as moisture-wicking as traditional swimwear fabric. It's still usable though, and great for beginners!

A lot of people ask the difference between lycra and spandex. In summary, THEY ARE THE SAME THING! Lycra is a particular brand name of spandex.

Ever wonder why swimwear is so expensive, despite the fact that it is such a tiny piece of clothing? The cost of fabric is why! Swimwear fabric can get pricey, so be prepared for this, and always look out for good sales! Expect to pay around $8-$15 per yard of swimwear fabric. You can save money by buying it in-store, but it is more difficult to find what you want
